Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders and is typically diagnosed during childhood. Many teens with ADHD have trouble focusing or struggle with impulsive behavior that influences their overactivity. There are 3 ways that ADHD presents itself, depending on which symptoms are strongest — inattentive presentation, hyperactive-impulsive presentation, or an equal combination of both.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

It can affect several body parts or systems, such as your teen’s nervous system, metabolism, and cell function. IDD is typically present at birth and affect 1% to 3% of children worldwide.

Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is one of the most common genetic conditions in the U.S., with nearly 6,000 babies being born with this condition each year. Down syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome 21. Screening and diagnostic tests during pregnancy can often detect whether or a baby has a higher chance of having this condition.

Down syndrome can lead to mental and physical challenges and health problems, including eye diseases, hearing issues, and heart defects.

Tourette Syndrome

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that usually causes involuntary movements or sounds in a repetitive manner. Symptoms of Tourette syndrome often appear in children between the ages of 5 and 10. Although there isn’t a known cure for this disorder, treatment is available. Many people learn to control their tics and behavior during and after their teen years. 

Rett Syndrome

Although rare, Rett syndrome is another neurodevelopmental condition that affects your brain. Babies with Rett syndrome typically develop as expected during the first 6 months of life, then there is a slow decline like motor coordination difficulties, communication, and muscle control. The onset of symptoms is sudden, including compulsive hand movements, like rubbing, clapping, or wringing of the hands. 

Specific Learning Disorders

Specific learning disorders are often determined by neurological impairments in areas like reading, writing, or math. About 5% to 15% of school-age children experience some kind of learning disorder, like dyslexia, which impairs reading abilities. Sometimes specific learning disorders are mistaken for other disorders, like ADHD, especially if children appear unfocused or struggle with learning in school.
