What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety disorders go deeper than people’s occasional worry, which is a normal part of life. People with anxiety disorders find that worry doesn’t go away and can worsen without treatment. There are several types of anxiety disorders, which are diagnosed based on symptoms and triggers.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an estimated 31.9% of adolescents have had an anxiety disorder. In that group, 8.3% had a severe impairment. The NIH finds the prevalence of anxiety disorders is higher in female adolescents than in males. However, the prevalence in adolescents is similar across all age groups ranging from 13 to 18 years.

Find Out About Our Teen Anxiety Admissions

Different Types of Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are challenging conditions. There are different signs of anxiety in teens depending on the different anxiety disorders a teen is experiencing. Anxiety symptoms in teens range from a pounding heart and feeling out of control to being easily fatigued or irritable. The following are examples of anxiety disorders that teenagers and adolescents may experience.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Anxiety symptoms in teenagers with general anxiety disorder typically include a persistent feeling of dread that interferes with daily life. This is not the same as occasionally being concerned about stressful life events. Other symptoms include being easily fatigued, having difficulty concentrating, or having problems sleeping, including falling asleep or staying asleep.

Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)

Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)

Teens with social anxiety disorder have a persistent fear of others watching and judging them, so going to work, school, and doing everyday things causes stomach aches, sweating, difficulty making eye contact, and a racing heart. Social anxiety disorder is a phobia that produces irrational or excessive worrying, and the teenager takes active steps to avoid these situations.

Panic Disorder

Panic Disorder

Teenagers with panic disorder experience unexpected panic attacks in which they experience intense fear or a sense of losing control without a clear and present danger. Not every person who has a single panic attack develops a panic disorder. Young adults with panic disorder actively worry about the next attack and avoid situations or behaviors they associate with a panic attack.

Specific Phobias

Specific Phobias

A phobia is a condition in which a teenager experiences intense fear. Specific phobias are sometimes called simple phobias and occur when an adolescent fears a simple object or situation, such as heights, blood, getting an injection, flying, or specific creatures like dogs or snakes.

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia causes intense fear in more than one situation. Teens avoid these situations so they don’t have a panic-type reaction. In the most severe form, a person with agoraphobia may become housebound. Situations that trigger fear may include being in an open or enclosed space, standing in a line, being in a crowd, or using public transportation.

Separation Anxiety Disorder

Separation Anxiety Disorder

Most of the time, people think of separation anxiety disorder as something only young children deal with. However, teenagers and adults can fear being away from the people they are close to. They worry that bad things can happen, and the fear makes them avoid being alone or separated from their loved ones.

Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety in Teens

Teenagers who have anxiety aren’t just simply worrying too much. Anxiety disorders are characterized by fear and distress that are disproportionate to the situation. Parents want their children to grow up happy, healthy, and resilient to many challenges. Yet, anxiety is a growing concern in adolescents and teenagers.

Coping can be difficult for parents and teens, but the good news is that it is a highly treatable condition once you recognize the symptoms and get professional help. When the symptoms are left untreated, an anxiety disorder can create long-term challenges that continue into adulthood.

It can sometimes be challenging to tell if adolescent behavior is part of growing up or if you should seek help from a licensed mental health professional. Anxiety is treatable, but parents sometimes need help starting conversations with their teenager about mental health. For guidance on how to begin, consider calling BasePoint Academy at (972) 357-1749.

Symptoms of anxiety in teens include:

  • Restlessness or on edge
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Increasing irritability
  • Apprehension
  • Stomach aches, headaches, or unexplained pain
  • Excessive worrying
  • Difficulty controlling worrying
  • Agitation
  • Problems sleeping
  • Panic attacks
  • Mental distress
  • Being self-conscious or fearful that they are being judged
  • Irrational fears or worries about people, objects, or situations
  • Situations trigger panic-type reactions
  • Constant motion, unable to sit quietly
  • Isolated from friends and family
  • Decreased performance at school
  • Loss of interest and activities and friends
  • More sensitive to criticism
  • Eating more or less food
  • Nightmares
  • Substance use

What Is an Anxiety Treatment Center for Teenagers?

Anxiety treatment centers for teenagers are equipped with licensed mental health professionals who have experience in adolescent psychology and understand the treatment modalities essential for teenagers to heal and achieve sustainable recovery. The benefits include ensuring teens have the tools to manage anxiety in the short term and techniques they can use in the long term.

Feelings of anxiety can lead to isolation and loneliness, which contributes to worsening symptoms. Adolescent treatment centers specializing in teenage anxiety help teens heal from the underlying trauma by incorporating several therapeutic strategies. Before starting an outpatient program, your team undergoes a thorough medical and psychological evaluation to ensure a customized approach to adolescent therapy that addresses their specific needs.

Effective Teenage Anxiety Treatment Must Rise To Meet The Demand in Dallas

Without proper teen anxiety treatment, anxiety symptoms can develop into more serious mental health issues. Social phobia, a panic disorder, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and self-injury thoughts or behavior can be present when the patient suffers from severe anxiety symptoms.

Suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder can interfere with your teen’s ability to function and complete routine activities due to prolonged exposure to stress. Over time, this exposure can develop into deeper, more concerning traumas and diagnoses that require additional treatment.

If you or your teen struggles with anxiety in Dallas, don’t wait to seek treatment. There is healing beyond the struggle at a rehab facility near you.

Basepoint Academy Is Here To Help.

Anxiety In Teens

According to The National Institutes of Health (NIH), one out of every three teens between the ages of thirteen and eighteen will experience an anxiety disorder in some form. Anxiety can also develop from many different sources and it’s important to understand potential warning signs and risk.

Our teens face increased pressure from friends, family, school, and even social media. These external influences can lead to an increase in negative thoughts, manifest as continuous nervousness, and even intensify the teen’s anxiety to physical symptoms such as sweaty palms, headaches, and stomachaches.

Types of Treatment Programs for Teen Anxiety

BasePoint Academy provides highly structured outpatient treatment to give young adults the help they need so they can return home at night to practice the skills they have learned. Three of those outpatient programs include a partial hospitalization program, an intensive outpatient program, and crisis stabilization services to treat teen anxiety.

Partial Hospitalization Program for Teen Anxiety

Partial Hospitalization Program for Teen Anxiety

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) ensures your adolescent receives help for anxiety treatment without needing to check into an inpatient or residential program. The PHP program provides comprehensive care, so every facet of the teen experience is addressed. A PHP program is five days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

During this time, your teenager participates in various therapeutic interventions. The program is designed to help teenagers navigate societal challenges while still allowing them to get educational guidance and manage their school assignments. The length of the program is customized to meet your teenager’s needs.

Intensive Outpatient Program for Teen Anxiety

Intensive Outpatient Program for Teen Anxiety

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers daily anxiety treatment customized to meet your teen’s needs. Before beginning treatment, your teenager undergoes a thorough medical and psychological evaluation based on a customized treatment program. This treatment program can include a variety of therapeutic interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, individual therapy, and aftercare plans.

When your teenager cannot concentrate at home or school, has declining grades, problems sleeping or eating, and has persistent mood or attitude changes, they may need more than once-a-week therapy to address their mental health. It can be painful to watch your child struggle, but it’s essential to know that it’s not unusual and these concerns can be overcome. The experienced mental health professionals at BasePoint Academy can help.

Crisis Stabilization Services for Teen Anxiety

Crisis Stabilization Services for Teen Anxiety

The crisis stabilization program is led by an experienced team using tools and resources that help diffuse a mental health crisis triggered by intense emotions. No matter the trigger, it is challenging for teenagers and families to navigate it safely. Crisis stabilization services help mitigate a permanent response and reduce acute symptoms.

The goal is to provide your adolescent access to the least restrictive environment possible and still meet their current level of need. However, in some severe cases, your teen may need short-term hospitalization until they are no longer an active danger to themselves or others.

Types of Therapy and Counseling for Anxiety Disorder in Teens

Teen anxiety treatment can take several forms. Base Point Academy has identified how to help a teen with anxiety using several talk therapy and counseling strategies, which sometimes include medication management for teen anxiety medication. To the right is a short list of several therapeutic strategies for treating teen anxiety. For more information, please call BasePoint Academy at (972) 357-1749.

Psychodynamic Therapy Techniques for Anxiety

Psychodynamic Therapy Techniques for Anxiety

Psychodynamic therapy helps teenagers improve their self-awareness and decrease symptoms of anxiety. Psychodynamic therapy is a form of talk therapy that analyzes relationship patterns and how they affect behavior. It is unlike problem-based therapies in that it seeks to understand the underlying and internal processes that have caused your teenager to arrive in their current circumstances.

The goal is to increase a person’s self-awareness so they develop a better understanding of their inner thought patterns and gain a new perspective on their past experiences. Some of the positive outcomes include improved interpersonal relationships and reduced dysfunctional patterns, with less emotional suffering.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Teen Anxiety

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Teen Anxiety

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a problem-focused therapeutic intervention that’s highly effective in helping teenagers struggling with anxiety overcome the thoughts and emotions that often seem insurmountable. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a short-term process that helps teens connect their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to treat anxiety effectively.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Teen Anxiety

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Teen Anxiety

When the mental health team designs a customized therapy program, it may include dialectical behavior therapy. This is a form of talk therapy that can treat a variety of mental health conditions. This therapeutic intervention arms teenagers with coping skills and empowers them to address the pain and emotions at the root of their anxiety.

Teenagers can achieve greater self-acceptance in an environment where they feel safe and empowered. Teenagers learn practical coping skills and develop a strong personal peace while learning emotion regulation.

Experiential Therapy for Anxiety in Teenagers

Experiential Therapy for Anxiety in Teenagers

Experiential therapy helps teenagers to see their past experiences from a new perspective. This changes their inner thought patterns and emotions and creates new coping techniques they can use in the present situation and take with them in the future. Experiential therapy is an evidence-based approach that addresses thoughts and emotions linked to past events.

By establishing a healthier processing pattern, your teen can develop new skills and improve their ability to navigate emotions and thoughts. Experiential therapy involves art therapy, drama therapy, music therapy, and recreational therapy.

Family Therapy for Teenagers with Anxiety

Family Therapy for Teenagers with Anxiety

You and your teenager deserve a safe space to work through the challenges of anxiety, grief, and disruptive behaviors. Under the guidance of skilled and experienced therapists and counselors, your family can open healthy lines of communication that foster trust, relationship building, and a renewed sense of closeness.

Group Therapy for Adolescents with Anxiety

Group Therapy for Adolescents with Anxiety

Group therapy allows your adolescent to build new skills in a peer group and receive support when they’re struggling with anxiety. A group therapy treatment program has proven highly effective, offering teens an open and safe space to address concerns in a group setting. The goal is to equip teenagers to develop resiliency and effective coping strategies.

Individual and Person-Centered Anxiety Therapy for Teens

Individual and Person-Centered Anxiety Therapy for Teens

Nearly every teenager at BasePoint Academy engages in individual one-to-one therapy with a counselor to guide the program. Person-centered therapy is a psychotherapeutic intervention in which the therapist uses nondirective talk therapy to help your teenager discover personal solutions to the problem.

As your teen learns how to take charge of themselves, they learn strategies to use moving forward. Person-centered therapy emphasizes your teenager’s ability to affect change in their life, including with anxiety and depression. The therapist uses a nondirective approach that encourages the teenager to take the lead and develop solutions they can test in a structured environment.

Does Insurance Cover Anxiety Treatment for Teens?

Yes, the government mandates that all health insurance plans offer some level of coverage for anxiety treatment for teenagers who are on your policy. In 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandated coverage for essential healthcare benefits, which includes treatment for mental health conditions and substance use disorders.

While your insurance policy offers some level of coverage for anxiety treatment for beneficiaries listed on your policy, the level of coverage varies. Most insurance companies have an online portal where members can check their benefits and limits. However, insurance jargon can be complicated, and it’s not always easy to understand if your policy requires prior authorization before treatment can begin. The easiest way to check your insurance policy and identify the documentation your insurance company needs is to call BasePoint Academy at (972) 357-1749.

Which Health Insurance Providers Cover Anxiety Disorder Treatment for Teenagers?

As the ACA mandates, all insurance companies offering health insurance policies must provide some level of coverage for anxiety disorder treatments for teenagers covered on the policy. However, not all policies offer the same level of coverage. Additionally, some insurance policies only cover treatment at in-network facilities.

It is important to verify your insurance coverage and determine if prior authorization is required before treatment can begin. Some health insurance companies include UnitedHealthcare Insurance, Kaiser, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Humana, Cigna Coverage, and Aetna insurance.

What is the Adolescent Anxiety Treatment Program Admissions Process?

An adolescent anxiety treatment program admission process helps ensure that your teenager receives a customized plan of care to help them heal from the negative thought patterns and possible trauma that triggered the anxiety. The specific admission process can vary between treatment centers, but in general, you can expect the following:

  1. Initial Contact: During the initial contact, the treatment center can answer your questions and help identify your next steps. This often includes an initial anxiety test and verification of your rehab insurance coverage.
  2. Assessment and Evaluation: Your teen will undergo a medical and psychological evaluation to identify their needs, including any mental health conditions and potential substance use disorders.
  3. Insurance Verification and Coverage: The admission specialist verifies your rehab insurance coverage, determines if prior authorization is required before treatment, and helps guide in gathering the necessary documentation for prior authorization.
  4. Treatment Plan Development: The licensed mental health professionals at an adolescent anxiety treatment program develop a customized plan of care for your teenager.
  5. Admissions Coordination: Whether your teen is undergoing a residential treatment program or a highly structured outpatient program, admission coordination will help ensure the insurance company is aware of the treatment plan and your teenager is prepared to begin their customized plan of care.
  6. Orientation and Program Introduction: On the first day of treatment, your teen will be oriented to the facility and the overall program and goals. This helps young adults anticipate what’s coming next and feel more comfortable in their environment.
  7. Active Participation in Treatment: During the treatment program, your teenager is expected to actively participate in therapeutic interventions.
  8. Progress Monitoring and Adjustments: The effectiveness of the treatment plan is routinely evaluated while your team is in treatment, and adjustments are made as necessary.

What Teen Anxiety Looks Like Today

What is the connection between your teen and the presence of anxiety symptoms or an anxiety disorder? Typically, there are several contributing factors to the development of anxiety, and we leverage the evidence-based research to effectively treat teens with anxiety disorders.

Anxiety Testing and Assessment for Teen Boys and Girls

During the initial assessment and evaluation at BasePoint Academy, teenagers undergo anxiety testing and assessment to determine if an anxiety disorder may be part of their underlying mental health condition. Healthcare professionals must use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria to correctly diagnose mental health conditions, including different types of anxiety disorders.

While the name of the anxiety test for teens may differ, the symptoms the test looks for must fall within the DSM-5 criteria. At-home self-assessments can give false positive or false negative results as an accurate test also relies on the experience and knowledge of a licensed mental health professional. The anxiety test for teens includes general symptoms of anxiety and more specific symptoms of different types of anxiety disorders.

While seeking professional help is the best course of action for successful teen anxiety treatment, there are things you can do in support of their anxiety treatment.

It’s important to support young loved ones through their anxiety disorders. Always use supportive language and never negatively question or show disbelief in what they’re experiencing.

Avoid these phrases and unproductive expressions:

  • This isn’t really a big deal
  • Why do you feel anxious all the time?
  • I know how you feel (when you don’t)
  • Just stop worrying
  • Get over it
  • Just breathe in and breathe out
  • Have you tried…
  • This is just in your head

While the direct cause of teen anxiety is multi-faceted, there are several impactful life experiences that could be triggering. Traumatic life events, low self-esteem, natural disasters, and childhood physical, mental, or sexual abuse can all trigger reactions associated with anxiety disorders.

There are also some underlying medical or genetic causes that could indicate increased risk factors that are linked to anxiety. Some of these health conditions include heart disease, diabetes, thyroid imbalance, respiratory issues, COPD, asthma, and drug misuse.

Academic pursuits are often one of the first things to suffer when a teen with anxiety is struggling to attend school or learn new information. Too often, vital treatment can overshadow academic studies.

This is what drives our philosophy at BasePoint Academy and what sets our methods apart. Every day, we work closely with parents, teachers, and school districts to ensure students receive both holistic treatment for anxiety and the educational tutoring they need so they don’t fall behind.
