Mental health challenges are the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young Americans. Three years ago, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued an advisory on youth mental health because the United States had seen significant increases in certain mental health disorders in youth, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.
“Between 2011 and 2015, youth psychiatric visits to emergency departments for depression, anxiety, and behavioral challenges increased by 28 percent,” Dr. Murthy wrote. “Between 2007 and 2018, suicide rates among youth ages 10–24 in the US increased by 57 percent.”
Blake Serpa, the founder and CEO of BasePoint Health Management, understands the challenges families living with a mental health crisis face all too well. He lost his sister Brittney in 2012 and the Serpa family decided to help other families struggling with mental health issues. “We developed a place where people can get the care they need,” Serpa says. “We wanted to create a space where everyone was welcome, a place where they felt comfortable seeking treatment.”
Nurse practitioner Princess Eghianruwa joined BasePoint in June. She noticed quickly that BasePoint was different. “Coming here, I noticed that the team is very big on communication, and I’m a big fan of that. It makes planning and doing what I need to do for clients go very smoothly.”
If new issues emerge, Eghianruwa can text other team members quickly or she just goes to their office to have a brief chat about any patients she is concerned with. “We essentially just make it a conversation. And then, if we have any concerns, we escalate that to the entire treatment team if necessary,” she explains. “Good communication is a big part of the BasePoint culture. As a provider, it makes it much easier for you to treat clients when everyone’s on the same page.”
“Families choose BasePoint because we care,” says chief medical officer Kimberly Dobbins, MD. “We have dedicated staff who love this work—they love the patients they take care of.”
“We believe fundamentally that we have happy engaged team members who love what they do and have a mission and purpose for the work that they do and that directly translates to excellent patient care,” says CEO Serpa.
“I love working with kids,” says Eghianruwa. “They’re so vibrant, they’re so energetic. They are usually willing and receptive to change. They just bring this energy that makes the job fun and enjoyable.”
“We understand at times you don’t know where to turn,” says Serpa. “With BasePoint, we wanted to create a place where you are able to take control of the crisis and have a plan.”
“We like to think of our services as best in class,” says Dr. Dobbins. “We strive to get to know our patients with their families to get them the resources and tools to get to the next level. BasePoint really makes a difference in people’s lives.”
