Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common types of neurodevelopmental disorders, most often diagnosed during childhood. These challenges are typically present at birth, although IDD isn’t as common as other disorders. It affects 1% to 3% of children and is slightly more common in men than women. 

Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is one of the most common genetic conditions in the U.S. Around 6000 babies are born with this condition each year, due to an extra chromosome 21, also known as a trisomy. Performing screening and diagnostic tests during pregnancy can help detect whether or not your baby has a higher chance of having Down syndrome. 

Individuals with Down syndrome experience a change in brain development. This leads to mental and physical challenges and can lead to other health problems, such as eye diseases, hearing issues, and heart defects.

Tourette Syndrome

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that usually causes involuntary movements or sounds in a repetitive manner. Symptoms of Tourette syndrome often occur in children between the ages of 5 and 10. Although there isn’t a known cure for this disorder, treatment is available to help people manage their symptoms. Many individuals learn to control their tics and behavior during and after their teen years. 

Rett Syndrome

Although rare, Rett syndrome is another ND that affects how your brain develops. Babies with Rett syndrome typically develop as expected during the first 6 months of life, then there is a slow decline like motor coordination difficulties, communication, and muscle control. The onset of symptoms is sudden, including compulsive hand movements, like rubbing, clapping, or wringing of the hands. 

Specific Learning Disorder

Specific learning disorders are often determined by neurological impairments in areas like reading, writing, or math. About 5% to 15% of school-aged children experience some kind of learning disorder, like dyslexia, which impairs reading abilities. Sometimes specific learning disorders are mistaken for other disorders, like ADHD, especially if children appear unfocused or struggle with learning in school.
