BasePoint Academy’s Resiliency Program
Developing BPA’s Treatment Approach
We began to develop The Resiliency Program, our clinical/medical approach to treatment, in 2020, around the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is when we saw a significant uptick in the general awareness of behavioral healthcare needs. At the same time, we saw a disparity develop between awareness and access to effective care. This Industry was flooded with teens seeking treatment for the very first time after developing maladaptive coping mechanisms while experiencing untreated behavioral healthcare needs. On the other end of the spectrum, this industry was flooded with patients who had been stuck in a vicious cycle of one ineffective treatment after another. Faced with this adolescent mental healthcare epidemic, we felt challenged to provide a treatment program that met the entire needs spectrum because the need was so dire. Through detailed research and valuable field experience, BasePoint’s treatment philosophy was influenced by the human experience of adversity and the development of resiliency.
Why Resiliency?
Research indicates that when we encounter the fundamental human experience of adversity, every single person will develop an individualized stress response variability. As people experience trauma, triggers, stressors, or even uncomfortable situations, they begin to develop ways to cope with the experience, whether healthy or unhealthy.
Through the experience of adversity and the development of an individualized stress response variability, research indicates that about 65% of the population develops RESILIENCY. They develop an innate capacity to heal, which is a fundamental component of establishing lasting change. About 35% of the population, as they encounter adversity and develop an individualized stress response variability, develop psychopathology or mental health and/or substance use challenges and need assistance in finding unique ways to activate their innate capacity to heal.
Thankfully, the adolescent age is the prime opportunity to develop resiliency because that is when our brains are the most malleable. Meaning teens are highly susceptible to the harmful effects of adversity but just as easily susceptible to the healing power of developing resiliency.
Therefore, at BasePoint Academy, we provide an immersive treatment experience where we teach teens how to bounce back from life’s biggest challenges. We are doing this by changing the treatment narrative. Instead of responding to adversity, BasePoint Academy is equipping our teens with the capacity to prepare for adversity, and we take it a step further by helping our teens find unique ways to activate their innate capacity to heal and establish lasting change.
BasePoint Academy Is Changing the Treatment Narrative
Adversity is an inevitable part of the human experience and the first step in preparing for adversity is a shift in perspective on the healing process. At BasePoint Academy, we help teens shift their perspective on the idea that adversity must be completely removed from their lives to find healing and stability.
Instead, we empower teens towards the path of resiliency by equipping them with the skills necessary to MINIMIZE THE IMPACT that adversity has on their overall well-being.
This shift in perspective is the moment teens begin to believe in their own power to bounce back from life’s biggest challenges and provides teens with the intrinsic motivation to activate their innate capacity to heal and establish lasting change.
Teens in treatment at BasePoint Academy receive Resiliency Resources that provide insight into the treatment process, Resiliency curriculum, group schedules, and so much more. Parent/Guardian(s) of our teens in treatment at BasePoint Academy also receive Resiliency Resources in the form of a Parent Handbook that provides parent/guardian(s) their own unique insight into the BPA treatment process.
Knowledge is power, and we want our teens (and their families) empowered to start building resiliency from day one.
