Motivational Interviewing Therapy
Motivational interviewing therapy is a client-centered counseling style that works to evoke a behavior change, reduce ambivalent feelings, and support self-efficacy through developing self-motivation and implementing affirmations.
Motivational Interviewing Therapy: A Motivational Counseling Approach For Teens
As humans, we all experience conflicting desires. As teens, you’re faced with a constant choice of what you need, what you want, and how what you’re doing now fits in. Intrinsic motivation is like any other muscle in the body or mind. It must be trained and cultivated to facilitate positive behavior change.
Motivational interviewing is one of our industry’s highly effective and beneficial mental health services, proven to help teens like you enhance their own motivation and resolve ambivalence. It’s an effective treatment for a myriad of mental health disorders and conditions, as well as those struggling with a dual diagnosis of a Substance Use Disorder.
Increasing a person’s motivation alone can be difficult and often unsuccessful, especially as an adolescent dealing with so many social and physiological challenges. If you or a loved one are seeking victory over substance abuse or desire a positive behavior change, it’s time to find your motivation for change by working with an Motivational Interviewing clinician. It’s time to get motivated and promote personal well-being.
What Is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based counseling approach that was developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick in the 1980s and is considered a form of Psychotherapy. Guilford Press published the undisputed source for education and training in this field, authored by its creators.
Today, it is a hallmark of our behavioral health and adolescent mental health services at BasePoint Academy.
Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered counseling style that works to evoke a behavior change, reduce ambivalent feelings, and support self-efficacy through developing self-motivation and implementing affirmations.
When a person’s motivation is low, it creates an overwhelming barrier to one’s ability to overcome a drug or alcohol addiction, mental health disorder, or process disorder. Motivational interviewing techniques help teens discover their own motivation to make a positive behavior change.
The spirit of motivational interviewing is to help the patient overcome indecisive or ambivalent feelings and take the desired actions. The change process is empowering to teens and helps them take ownership of their own ideas.
Here’s What Motivational Therapy Looks Like
The spirit of MI has proven value in the treatment of a variety of mental and behavioral health conditions. Throughout the stages of change, our adolescent therapists will use reflective listening and express empathy toward each patient.
Miller and Rollnick designed Motivational Interviewing techniques to help each patient develop a positive attitude toward change and to increase their commitment to change over longer periods of time.
Our teen-focused providers will help them to see the inconsistency between the current behavior and the target behavior and make the connection to personal values. We want to help the patient feel the disparity in their desires and actions.
The spirit of MI is to ask open-ended questions and employ reflective listening to identify change talk. It relies heavily on reframing concepts to the patient in a supportive manner and encouraging the use of affirmations.
Change talk is how we describe the language the patient uses to communicate their perspective on their ability to change.
Examples of change talk would be “I wish” or “I could” during the initial stages of change, while “I need” and “I will” make appearances in the later stages of change.
We believe that in order for patients to facilitate a lasting behavior change, we must support self-efficacy. The patient must believe in their own capacity to embody the target behavior and make positive changes.
Motivational Interviewing is an industry-leading holistic healthcare modality effective for addiction treatment, substance use, mental health disorders, and behavior disorders.
