What are Some Signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is a neurodevelopmental behavioral disorder that’s typically first diagnosed in childhood. Children exhibit characteristic symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. While most children have all three symptoms, some children have just one without the others. When there is hyperactivity, it is almost always apparent by the time the child is seven years.

Symptoms of inattention or attention deficit may not show up until your child is in elementary school and expected to remain attentive for longer periods of time. There are three major types of ADHD, which include teenagers who present predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, or have combined attention deficit and hyperactivity. While it is one of the most researched areas in adolescent mental health, the cause of the disorder is still unknown. The CDC estimates roughly 9.8% of children aged 3 to 17 years have been diagnosed with ADHD, which is roughly 6 million people. Boys are more likely to be diagnosed than girls and the estimates of ADHD vary by state.

Teenage ADHD Stats in Texas

ADHD occurs in roughly 3–5% of all adolescents in Texas and many have comorbid mental health disorders, including anxiety, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and learning disabilities. ADHD is among the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders in children and according to the CDC, in 2019, 8.8% of parents in Texas reported their child had been diagnosed with ADHD.

Of those, 40.5% reported the child was currently taking medication. There was some concern that rates could escalate during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, so researchers analyzed the national data distribution finding that the prevalence was 8.7% with 62.1% of those children taking medication.
