For Families and Teens Struggling With Behavior Difficulties
It’s not all fun and games. As a teen, it can seem like there’s too much changing around you, and it’s difficult to keep up. Maybe you’re feeling stuck, alone, or fearful. Whether this is due to big life transitions, academic pressure, family dysfunction, or substance use, it can be too much to cope with.
So you’re overwhelmed. Frustrated. Angry.
But that’s not who you truly are. How can you stop the cycle?
As a parent, you see that your teen is moody and irritable. They have difficulty sleeping and are falling behind in school. They’ve connected with undesirable influences and are acting out in ways you could have never predicted. Lying, defiance, criminal activity, substance use. It’s too hard to watch, and you must do something out of love and care for your teen.
What is Behavioral Therapy?
Behavioral Healthcare is an evidence-based field of psychiatry and therapeutic modalities related to human behavior, its cause, and triggers. Behavioral Therapy is an overarching term used to refer to the broad spectrum of behavior therapies and techniques in practice.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for teens is a talk therapy that was created to aid patients who were suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder and suicidal ideations. It has since been proven effective in the treatment of many mental health concerns, from mood disorders such as teen depression to PTSD and eating disorders.
DBT works to align opposite ideas in our minds to help patients cope with and accept life as it is. Patients are equipped to live life within realistic parameters and identify the negative behavior that presents when they don’t. These healthy coping skills prepare patients to face life more proficient at transforming negative feelings into productive thinking and desirable behavior.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for teens is a common and highly effective treatment for behavioral difficulties. It’s another form of talk therapy that focuses more on the identification of negative mental patterns and their subsequent automatic behavioral effects.
The philosophy behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that many of the challenges our teens face can be directly connected to negative thought patterns and mental health issues. These thought patterns produce undesirable responses. Once the pattern is identified, it is then adapted to give a more desirable result.
Increased awareness of the connection between the action and the root thought results in changed thinking. Changed thinking results in healthier processing patterns and fewer behavioral difficulties. Cognitive Therapy is an effective treatment for drug and alcohol addiction and a myriad of mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, Schizophrenia, and eating disorders.
Experiential Therapy
Teen experiential therapy is an active participation modality where the patient participates in an external activity while engaging their thoughts and feelings. They will process past traumas, re-experience emotional events, while engaging in a relaxing or physical activity.
This process helps the patient recognize and address their mental and emotional patterns and work through them during the activity to view them from a new, more objective perspective. Experiential Therapy activities include a wide range of experiences from art, music, and drama to yoga, hiking, and nature walks.
