What Causes Depression?

Depression’s exact cause, like the brain itself, is complex and not fully understood. However, there have been massive strides and clinically proven treatment protocols and medication with clinical efficacy that are proven to treat depression.

There are also several types of depression. Some depression can be caused by an event, like a change in season, or passing of a loved one. For others, depression can be a lifelong struggle that onsets early in life. Causes for depression can span from too much or too little of specific brain chemicals, mood regulation problems stemming from the brain, genetic predispositions, medications, medical problems, seasonality and difficult life events.

Who Can Be Impacted By Depression?

The American Psychiatric Association reports that depression impacts one in 15 adults (6.7%) each year.

One in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their life. Depression most commonly surfaces during the late teens to mid-20s, but can occur at any time. It is not uncommon for depression to strike after a major life event, like a death or a divorce. Women are more likely than men to suffer from depression.

Common Depression Treatment Methods

While each patient’s care plan varies, below are some common treatment techniques that have been found to be effective in the treatment of depression. Your treatment may include one, or several of these techniques:

Psychotherapy, or “talk therapy,” can sometimes be used alone for mild depression. Psychotherapy may involve only the individual, or others you are in relationship with. For example, family or couples therapy can help address issues within these close relationships.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT has also been found as an effective depression treatment. CBT focuses on recognition of thinking patterns and learning tools to change behaviors and thoughts.
For moderate to more severe depression, patients may benefit from a combination of psychotherapy and antidepressant medications.

Antidepressants are very effective in the treatment of depression. Our psychiatrists will work with you to determine if medical intervention is a good fit to help you conquer your depression symptoms.

Alternative Depression Treatments

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

TMS Treatment is an innovative method that utilizes MRI strength pulses to treat root triggers of depression. Unlike medication, which treats symptoms, TMS targets the neurological problem of disconnected neural networks in the brain. TMS is performed non-invasively, helping re-establish proper brain messaging. By reconnecting your brain’s communication network, you can begin to see long-term relief from depression.

Spravato Treatment

Spravato treatment is an FDA approved treatment that has helped thousands of patients. We are able to offer this great treatment to our patients at BasePoint Psychiatry. Spravato is a new treatment that the FDA has fast tracked. This new treatment can, under the right circumstances be a great option for depression treatment.

Relaxation & Mindfulness

Relaxation and mindfulness techniques are very effective for the management of depression. Your provider may incorporate these into your care plan.

Self Care

Self care can have an immense impact on depression, but often is not enough alone to fully cure its symptoms. Consistent exercise helps create positive feelings in the brain and can improve mood. Quality, regular sleep, healthy diet, connecting with community, and avoiding alcohol (a depressant) can all help reduce symptoms of depression.

Depression is more than feeling sad. It is a chronic condition: is not a weakness, and is very treatable. Most people with depression feel better with medication, psychotherapy, or both.
